    Tom Ridge, Chair of the National Organization on Disability in an Opinion piece for the NY Times, April 17, 2019 stated: ” Work is one of the most important issues affecting some of the some 50 million Americans with disabilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2018 that roughly 30 percent of Americans ages 16 to 64 with a disability were employed , compared with nearly 75 percent of those without a disability. The unemployment rate of job seekers with disabilities is roughly 9 percent – more than double that of those without disabilities.

    Employment for Americans with disabilities remains one of the unfulfilled promises of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act.”. The law has helped in so many ways; however, there continues to be a lack of awareness and employers are not tapping into the tremendous pool of talent, and creativity available in the disability community.

    A discussion and gathering of information on the topic of employment of persons with disabilities is scheduled for Thursday, May 30, 2019 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at Indina University Northwest, Moraine Student Center, 3400 Broadway, Gary, Indiana.
