City Councilwoman Rebecca Wyatt presented a Resolution on February 5th to the full Council which then voted to send to the Ways and Means Committee for Hearing on February 12th; this is a Resolution by the Gary Common Council to make meetings, public notices and legislation accessible to all citizens and residents of Gary.
For a number years Causes for Change in partnership with the City of Gary’s Miller Neighborhood Spotlight has brought to the attention of public officials of the need to make facilities, services and events accessible, particularly to the more than 20% of its population who has some type of mobility, sensory, cognitive disability, including its aging population. It is our hope that this Resolution will raise awareness of the failure to comply with existing Disability Laws.
Causes for Change has advocated for enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA, title II, III and IV. It is our hope that with this Resolution and the upcoming election in May, 2019 more candidates will present their position on their intentions for making facilities and providing services to the Disability Community known.
