Causes for Change is pleased to be able to provide support to National Park Service and Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission as we celebrate month of March as Disability Awareness Month.
A one-day training, scheduled for March 20th from 9:00 AM -4:00 PM to be held at NIRPC offices located at 6100 Southport Road in Portage, Indiana. This training is designed to give learners a greater understanding of the concept of “program access” and the application of the accessibility standards for the unique outdoor recreation opportunities of Northwest Indiana. Discussion will include the interplay of the Americans With Disabilities Act, Section 504 are the Rehabilitation Act, and the Archutectural Barriers Act for federal, state, municipal, and cooperative partners facilities.
The training with focus on the accessibility of outdoor recreation spaces for people with disabilities such as picnic areas, beaches, scenic viewing areas, paddling/boating and fishing facilities, bike paths, and trails. Learners will also explore the principles of Universal Design and opportunities to design beyond the minimum standards for all visitors.
Jennifer Skulski will serve as the instructor for this training program. Jennifer has more than 22-years professional experience as a consultant, instructor, and researcher advocating for the inclusion of people with disabilities in parks, recreation, and tourism.
